Every year in August, the Lucanian village of Avigliano celebrates its favorite dish, that of tradition, with the Codfish Festival.
This event celebrates 23 years and has become one of the Basilicata wine and food events.
It starts on Thursday afternoons and goes on until Saturday night to taste the many typical products of the tradition but especially the cod, cooked in many different ways, both traditional and imaginative.
Dried and salty, food easy to store and transport, in mountain or inland villages such as Avigliano, was consumed as an alternative to fresh fish - abundant in coastal areas - and meat. The numerous food stands serve it as tradition in the ciauredda version, cod in soup with tomatoes and fresh onions, with "cruschi" peppers or with olives, just to name a few.
Promoted by the city council and organized by the councilor for the promotion and enhancement of the territory and the commerce department, the Baccalà Festival proposes shows of waders, the Avigliano exhibitions beyond sight and Avigliano and Aviglianesi in the 60s, pizzica performances, puppet theater and entertainment during all three days of the event.
