Bed & Breakfast Holiday House "Da Paolo e Francesca", Pignola in Basilicata" />
On the day of 16 and 17 January, Pignola perpetuates the secular rite linked to the celebration of Sant'Antonio Abate.
The celebration begins on the evening of the sixteen when a huge bonfire is fired near the church of the saint.
The Pignoli people, in the old days, also used to bring home a little 'embers and some embers to light the fire that lasted all winter.
They imitated, in a certain way, the miracle of the Saint who according to tradition descended into hell to take fire to give it to men and brought home the blessing of the saint.
The race of horses, mules and even donkeys, is held on January 17 and is the culmination of a ritual in which the people of Pignoli are very attached.
The animals converge in the square to receive the blessing and when the priest gives it the race begins.
A reckless and spectacular race that takes place through the narrow streets of the center, completing the three devotional turns around the church. The characteristic manifestations have deep roots and still remain a devotion and the desire to attend a ritual is preferred for the competitive aspect.
